Eight years ago in August 2002 the United States decided in coordination with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R) to transmit a new civil signal on a third frequency known as L5. This new signal is part of the IIF modernized signal filing, which also includes the military signal (M-code) on L1 and L2 frequencies and the new civil signal L2C. GPS in Mid-life with an International Team of Doctors Analyzing IIF-1 Satellite Performance and Backward-Compatibility
With the launch of the first GPS IIF satellite, IIF-1 or SVN 62 on May 27, 2010, the U.S. GPS enters its midlife. The IIF-1 satellite is the very first GPS satellite with an operable L5 payload. The IIF-1 L1 and L2 signals were turned on June 6, 2010, and were set “healthy” on August 27, 2010. The satellite started to transmit L5 signal on June 17, 2010. We formed an international team of docto...

Non-aviation applications may take advantage of GNSS receivers th...
متن کاملThe Accuracy of Current GNSS Signal Sources for Radio Occultation Missions
GNSS RO utilizes the various navigation satellite systems as signal sources for atmospheric remote sensing. The frequency stability of the signals emitted by GNSS satellites is tied to the stability of the atomic frequency standards (AFS) they carry onboard and is thus critical to the quality of the atmospheric profiles derived from the occultation measurements. Because of the variety of AFS us...
متن کاملCharacterization of Signal Deformations for GPS and WAAS Satellites
Signal deformations are caused by imperfections or faults in the signal generating hardware onboard the satellites. Left uncorrected, these can lead to range errors. Thus they need to be measured and understood so their effects on user position accuracy and integrity can be better quantified. Past attempts have been made to characterize these distortions. This involved the collection and analys...

In Washington D.C., on 25 January 1999, Vice President Al Gore announced that two new civil signals would be broadcast on future Block IIF GPS satellites. These new civilian signals, in combination with the L1 signal now available, will greatly enhance the accuracy, reliability and robustness of civilian GPS receivers, resulting in significantly improved system capabilities. This improved GPS p...
